 The Otherkin Community, Inc!
Welcome the first non-profit organization partially devoted to Otherkin!
Event from Fri Feb 13, 2009 5:00 am to Sat Feb 14, 2009 4:00 am

I would like to thank everyone for their donations and support during this long and tedious process - but it has paid off! I know there were many doubts - especially from the skeptics - as to whether or not a corporation involving Otherkin could actually be established. Well, on the 13th of February, we have proven those skeptics wrong.

http://appsext8.dos.state.ny.us/corp_public/CORPSEARCH.ENTITY_INFORMATION?p_nameid=3800699&p_corpid=3775227&p_entity_name=Otherkin&p_name_type=%25&p_search_type=CONTAINS&p_srch_results_page=0

The Otherkin Community, Inc. has been officially registered as a not-for-profit corporation under the State of New York. This is the first step in our long list of goals for this year and the years to come.

But we're far from done!

Ahead is filing with the IRS for tax exemption and obtaining 501(c)(3) status. That means The Otherkin Community is still in need of your help!

Donations

Please provide your donations and see current donation status via the following link:
http://otherkincommunity.org/wiki/The_Otherkin_Community:Site_support

Your donations will ensure that The Otherkin Community will be able to obtain its 501(c)(3) status with the IRS and support future projects. But by all means - ensure you agree with The Community's goals, outlined here:
http://otherkincommunity.org/wiki/The_Otherkin_Community%2C_Inc.

The Future

The Otherkin Community has many plans for the future. The staff is currently working out some of the kinks in the general ideas, but a post will be made regarding these ideas shortly. I hope the members share our excitement (and my personal excitement) for the coming years.

If you have any questions, you may ask directly in this thread, or contact me directly. Thank you once again, everyone, and welcome The Otherkin Community, Inc!

Oh - and don't you just love the day it was processed? Friday the 13th!

This has been a long time in the making, and it is really something to see all your work, Cloddy, and all of the Community support, paying off at last. This is a huge step, and I sincerely hope we can continue to push forward.

Friday the 13th.... heh. Good omen! Grin

Hmm, can someone tell me what the purpose of registering as a not-for-profit organisation is? What are the site ownership's plans that will be helped by this?

The Otherkin Community's objectives are available via the following link:

http://otherkincommunity.org/wiki/The_Otherkin_Community%2C_Inc.

Corporate existence gives us a number of legal benefits, most notable being reduced liability. Being a non-profit entity also allows for registering as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charity within the US, making any donations tax-deductible. With that comes many benefits from other parties (reduced postal rates, free advertising through Google's AdWords service, etc). I will not go through and list all the benefits here, but corporate existence, even without nonprofit status, gives countless benefits in many other regards.

Registering as a not-for-profit also legally binds the Community to performing duties that only further goals in line with federal and New York State non-profit code. Once a 501(c)(3), it provides further insurance by requiring that all expenses and actions be made fully available to the public, and ensuring that nothing is done that does not further tax-exempt goals.

Corporate status also means that The Community is no longer "owned" by myself. It is its own entity run entirely by the Board of Directors. This means that all of my own actions must be run by the Board (along with the other Board members). This helps ensure that The Otherkin Community does not suffer from personal ideals and actions that may be bias or fit in with my own personal agenda, or that of any of the other directors. All directors are legally obligated to keep in line with non-profit goals and other requirements resulting from corporate status.

Furthermore, though secondary to all the above, we hoped that by taking the time and keeping up with all such obligations that we would show other communities and outside parties that we are very serious of our goals and fully intend on pursuing them. Members of The Otherkin Community can rest assured that the Community will remain in existence and compliant to its goals for the duration of its existence, and that it will serve no private, hidden interests.

Ultimately, The Otherkin Community, Inc. being a corporation has very little to do with implications on Otherkin (which seems to be a misconception and concern raised by a number of people), and a whole lot to do with the other legal aspects and benefits arising from becoming a corporate entity.

I get the general idea - but what are the actual specifics of its application? Favourable taxation for donations for site upkeep, I'm not seeing a whole lot more than that as an actual benefit; so either I'm missing something or you plan to do something more with it in the future.

As all of OKC's projects are supported by the public, tax-exempt donations for funding (including the website) is a big part of it, yes. Though, compared to what I mentioned in my above post, that is only a very small fraction of the reason OKC is now a non-profit entity (the above post mentioned the applications). I'm not sure how to sum it up better than the provided link and the above information. Though, I have a habit of not quite explaining it properly. If there is a specific area above you are unsure about or some other way you could rephrase the question I can do my best to answer.

All I'm seeing is vague and general goals.

For example, you say you want to "Promote Otherkin Awareness". What are you doing - or what do you plan to do - to do this? What is the actual practical plan?

All we can currently provide are the general goal descriptions. The staff will be hard at work during the remainder of this year to propose ideas to the Community and further develop those goals by the beginning of 2010. Over the next couple months you may see a number of posts asking for help for various projects and ideas.

However, we're not going to be posting any information on any proposals until they are developed enough by the staff to be ready for commentary and development from our members. The only details that can be provided thusfar have been provided in the above link (which does give a number of details).

Congratulations, this is a great step in the right direction for establishing a solid group for understanding and discussion of these issues.
